Help Us Get To The Fringe!

The Kirkwood High School Theater Department (KHS Players) was recently honored in May 2011 as one of only 48 United States high schools selected as a finalist for the 18th annual American High School Theater Festival (AHSTF). The KHS Players were nominated by university faculty and professional regional directors who serve on the Festival nomination and selected from approximately 2,300 nominees. As a finalist, the KHS Players have been invited to perform their production of playwright Elmer Rice’s 1923 masterpiece, The Adding Machine, next August at the 2012 Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

The Edinburgh Fringe Festival is the largest and most prestigious arts festival in the world, and the KHS Players received this national recognition and distinct honor based on constantly providing outstanding theater opportunities for its students and the community.

The selection as an American High School Theater Festival finalist is the latest example of a commitment to excellence for the Kirkwood School District and the KHS Players. The Kirkwood High School Department of Fine Arts is the only high school department in the state of Missouri that has a full faculty production team consisting of a production director, technical director, musical director, costume director and vocal coach. Further, Kirkwood High School’s Department of Fine Arts is the only department in the state to offer its students and the community four full productions each school year.

The impact the department has on students is profound. This student testimonial from Jamey Powell, Class of 09, about her experience in the program is evidence that being a member of the KHS Players is a unique opportunity that molds young people into productive and thoughtful citizens:

I’ve had the great fortune to spend my summer working my first professional job playing the same role in Pirates of Penzance that I played in our production my junior year at Kirkwood with KH Players. The lessons I learned about myself as a performer and theatre itself are just as present for me now as they were in high school. If it wasn’t for Kirkwood’s theatre program, I honestly don’t think I ever would have realized that this craft is what I want to spend the rest of my life doing. It brought me an insane amount of happiness and inspiration that remains with me today and will only continue to grow with time.
