Sixth Grade Supports Stray Animal Rescue
Sixth graders, Caroline Bartels, Hailey Chellis, Sydney Henry, Elizabeth Longtine, and Callie Mechelke recently completed a service leaning project that's gone to the dogs! In their 5th period Problem Solving class with Mrs. Laura Schowalter, the girls began an inquiry into animal rescue. Their immediate goal was to find out the numbers of stray animals rescued each year in Missouri and what the cost to feed and shelter these animals might be. Once the girls completed their research and made a poster with their findings, they wanted to do something that might help these animals.
As a result, Nipher held a "Cutest Pet Contest" with all proceeds going to the Missouri Humane Society. The cost was $1 to enter a pet and 25 cents to vote. Nipher students and staff were encouraged to vote. There were 36 pets entered: dogs, cats, turtles, and rocks. We awarded prizes to our 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners. After one week of competition, Nipher raised over $113.00 for the Missouri Humane Society to help with stray rescue. A trip to the Humane Society is planned in the future to present the proceeds of the
contest.
