REACH Students Give Back
Nipher REACH Students Give Back
REACH students at Nipher complete an independent research project in 8th grade. Students choose a topic and a way to display what they have learned. They then have to complete in-depth research before working on their final product. Several of the students chose to complete service-learning projects as a way to show what they learned:
Allyson Uhles wrote a children's book on art history. While exploring this topic, she discovered there were few books at the elementary level on this topic, so she is writing one to donate to a Kirkwood elementary school.
Olivia Harris & Shannon Kilfoy were concerned with the various problems that occur when Nipher kids go downtown on Fridays. They have interviewed or emailed several business owners, surveyed students, and contacted City Hall to learn about local ordinances. For their final product they created an iMovie to show the students at Nipher School to remind the kids about proper behavior in downtown Kirkwood.
Matt Slavney studied the Arab/Israeli conflict, specifically since 1948. He developed a website that gives background information and ideas for peace.
Michelle Dodson is going to hold a Musical Composition Contest on Tuesday, May 18 at Nipher. Before this date, she met with groups of kids to give them tips on composing, etc. She studied advertising to learn the best way to publicize the event and plans to have professional musicians as judges. Michelle will ask for a $1.00 donation from attendees that will be donated to a music-related charity.
Emily Stobbe studied racial profiling and the mistreatment of some Muslims after 9/11. She wrote a children's book that teaches kids about what happened on September 11th and acceptance of others. She plans to donate one to each elementary school in Kirkwood.
