        OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY AT KEYSORY ELEMENTARY

Welcome to the Keysor Elementary School Occupational Therapy Website. My name is Janet Solomon, and I am an Occupational Therapist. I am happy to answer any questions you may have related to Occupational Therapy services here at Keysor. O.T. is located in room 007 on the ground floor of the building. My phone extension here at Keysor is ext. 2227.

Occupational Therapy is a "related service" when it is offered in school settings to children who receive special education services.  As such, the focus of Occupational Therapy is not on remediation of any particular disability, but is instead focused on helping children access their educational curriculum and school environment. In general, Occupational Therapists use purposeful activity to facilitate a child's participation in their academic or vocational coursework.

Occupational Therapy in a school setting helps children improve fine and gross-motor skills and visual-perceptual skills in order to help them learn to write or keyboard.  They help them develop dressing and feeding skills in order to be able to manage their clothing for bathrooms and feed themselves lunch.  They also help them modulate their sensory experiences in order to help them be able to better pay attention and participate in classroom learning. O.T.s may make recommendations on how to adapt classroom environments for learners, provide or recommend assistive technology or adaptive equipment to help children function better in a classroom, or help children learn how to organize and use class-related materials.

Occupational Therapy services may be implemented directly with a child, or indirectly on a consultative basis to the child's teachers.  Children may be seen in their general education classroom or in a special education setting away from their classroom. They may be seen individually or within a group.  The Occupational Therapist may consult with a teacher in a general way to give recommendations that may benefit all of the students in a classroom.  She may also work collaboratively with parents and other school staff members to help foster implementation of a child's special education.
