Top Ten Things About…Mrs. Stickley
1. I have a daughter named Juliet. She was born this past April. She loves playing in her gym and kicking her legs back and forth! She is almost ready to roll over! This summer Juliet and I swam every single day! Her swimsuit even has a tutu! Juliet is the LOVE of my life!
2. I love listening to music! My husband, Joe, is a singer-songwriter and plays his guitar all the time! He is a teacher too and teaches math to high school students. Juliet and I have so much fun dancing to his music!
3. Two years ago I adopted a dog named Willin’ and she is my very first pet! She is a Siberian Husky-Chow mix. Her tongue has purple spots all over it! She is a sweetheart and her favorite thing to do besides taking long walks and playing chase with me, is playing with the hose! She loves chasing the water and sometimes she even jumps straight up in the air to catch the water on her tongue!
4. I love to paint and I try to incorporate art into our Science and Social Studies curriculum. When I was in middle school, I took a watercolor class with my dad!
5. I love reading and my favorite time to read is before bed! My favorite children’s book of all time is Whoever You Are by Mem Fox.
6. My favorite number is 3 because I am one of 3 children in my family. I have a twin sister named Madeline and a younger brother named Matthew!
7. My favorite color is purple and my favorite animals are ELEPHANTS!
8. My favorite holiday is Valentine’s Day because my birthday is the day before.
9. It has been a lifelong dream to become a teacher! My mom and dad were both teachers and my husband Joe is a teacher too! I feel so blessed that my dream came true!
10. I love what I do…I TEACH!
More about Mrs. Stickley...
I am so excited to be teaching First Grade again this year! This is my 8th year teaching First Grade at North Glendale and I LOVE IT! Before I taught First Grade, I taught Kindergarten at Tillman.
Early on in my educational career, I was once told, "The children we teach will not care how much we know until they know how much we care." Thomas Sergiovanni. It is absolutely necessary that teachers show their students how much they care. I have learned that a large part of teaching is building relationships and showing students we believe in them. As an avid student of early childhood education for the last 11 years, I certainly have had the most success and have wanted to succeed the most when I have had teachers and professors who are passionate about the content, all the while, showing a great deal of compassion for my peers and me. These are the conditions under which we are all most likely to succeed. I am simply trying to be this for my students. I love the art of teaching, the craft of teaching, but even stronger, is how much I deeply care for my students. It has been my experience that ALL Kirkwood teachers share Sergiovanni’s insight of caring for all learners by building a classroom community, appealing to the students’ intellect, building self-confidence along with fostering a sense of passion for learning and empathy for others.
I have an endless pursuit for knowledge, and I strive for excellence in my teaching. I foster a positive learning environment that instills a sense of stability and belonging that motivates students to develop a quest for learning that continues throughout their lives. I know all children have the potential to learn and that individualized learning is essential for all students. I believe that children learn best by discovery, exploration, inquiry, and reflection. I believe it is compassionate, responsible and essential to appreciate and celebrate student differences as well as similarities. Phenomenal teachers ignite passion in their learners by celebrating student strengths every step of the way. Ultimately, I feel that teachers impact the world by teaching children how to become responsible civic leaders who are accepting of others. I am so fortunate to LOVE what I do every single day. I TEACH!
