Where am I?
JUDGES
INFORMATION FOR JUDGES
Judging science projects can be a very rewarding experience. As a judge, you get to see the level of work being done by Kirkwood students and experience the excitement many of these students have while investigating a problem. Your time and feedback is truly valued. Some of the students whose work you will view may well choose to spend their professional life in science, engineering, or mathematics. This is the first step toward that life, and you can help.
Below you will find more detailed information about what judging is all about. We hope you will decide to join us.
Who may be a judge?
Anyone with an interest in science may judge projects. No particular expertise is needed, but it is helpful if one is familiar with science methods and terminology (i.e. hypothesis, variables, etc.).
When does judging take place?
Judging for physical projects (display boards and logbooks) takes place the evening before SciFest (6-9pm) and the morning of SciFest (8:30am-12:30pm) at KHS. Enter the High School from the Dougherty Ferry parking lot. Judges may sign up for one time period, and may even specify a time frame (For example from 6-7pm on Friday evening, or from 9:30-11:00am on Saturday morning).
Judging for virtual projects takes place anytime from the due date for projects until the day before SciFest. Since these projects are submitted electronically, they may be judged from your home on your computer. We will supply the hard copy judging forms and projects. Judges may specify how many projects they wish to score.
How do I know I'm scoring correctly?
We provide training for judges. This year's training session will be from 7-9 pm, February 15 in the first floor conference room at Hough Learning Center, 106 N. Sappington. Training is not required, but is encouraged for first time judges or for those wishing a refresher.
Even with training, judges may need support while they are scoring projects. Help is always available during judging at KHS or by phone for virtual projects. Judges support each other and offer help, or Carol is available. IF you are scoring virtual projects and need assistance, call Carol. She will have a copy of the project and will be able to answer your quesiton or provide guidance.
