"The most exciting phrase to hear in science, the one that heralds the most discoveries, is not 'Eureka!' (I found it!) but 'That's funny...' "  ~Isaac Asimov

Welcome to the Kirkwood School District
SciFest Website

This site is designed to assist Kirkwood students at the elementary, middle, and high school levels begin and complete projects for the Kirkwood SciFest. The tools and links on this site will lead students, teachers, parents, and mentors through the science fair process.

Projects from the Kirkwood School District SciFest may be selected to be entered into the St. Louis Academy of Science - St. Louis Science Fair (formerly Greater St. Louis Science Fair, GSLSF), but the first step is to enter your project at the District Level.

Why Complete a Science Project?

In this day and age where understanding science, mathematics and engineering is essential for the well-informed citizen, engaging in a science project offers a unique insight into how science works through an open-inquiry process that is difficult to replicate in a science classroom.  In addition to the insights into science, math and engineering gained through the experience, projects utilize what are being called “21st Century Skills.”  These skills so much in demand by employers include communicating clearly, integrating information from multiple disciplines, engaging in teamwork, collaboration,  and creative problem-solving, and managing time effectively.  Science projects provide a valuable opportunity for students to share what they have learned about a topic with the broader community and to take pride in their accomplishment.

As students progress from elementary through high school fairs, opportunities abound for greater recognition of their accomplishments. Organizations and universities award scholarships, monetary prizes, and other awards to outstanding projects.  Participation in fairs also provides a chance for high school students to submit college applications that stand out from the rest.  For some of today’s scientists, SME fairs were the first step on their journey into science, mathematics or engineering.  Perhaps this is your child’s first step as well.
