ReachPlus Pilot Program

Pilot-2008

Program Rationale

ReachPlus is an extended learning opportunity for exceptionally gifted students in grades three through five that was developed to provide for the unique needs of these high ability learners.

Program Goals

The goal of the ReachPlus program is to provide challenging learning opportunities for high ability learners emphasizing real-world problem solving, technology, creativity, and higher-level thinking.

Program Description

ReachPlus students receive 120-150 minutes of personalized learning in a multiage setting within the Reach room, facilitated by the Gifted Resource Teacher. A Personalized Learning Plan (PLP) is developed for each learner upon qualification.

The ReachPlus program utilizes Type III learning opportunities from Joseph Renzulli’s Enrichment Triad Model (Renzulli, 1997). Type III learning activities engage learners in research investigations in areas of personal interest. These activities allow students to think, feel and act as practicing professionals. Students work to conduct research, gather data, solve problems, and create products.

Arrangements are made to compact content in curricular areas within the general education classroom in order to create time for ReachPlus attendance.

Program Qualification

ReachPlus qualification is based on the following criteria:
• current enrollment in the Reach program
• observation of exceptionally gifted characteristics by gifted resource and general education teachers
• recommended intervention as a result of the school wide Assist process
• parental approval

Program Schedule

The ReachPlus program at Keysor Elementary School is currently scheduled for Thursday mornings between 9:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. within the Reach classroom.
