Construction Updates

Where am I?

The Earl and Myrtle Walker Science Center Opens

In April 2005, Kirkwood School District voters passed bond issue Proposition I, which provides funds for immediate infrastructure repairs and improvements throughout the District, while also funding the District's master facilities plan over longer periods of time.

The new two-story science center began construction in May 2006 at Kirkwood High School and measures 51,000 square feet. The science center features 15 combined science classrooms/laboratories, five each for chemistry, biology and physics. The rooms are designed to reflect current research and best practices in science education. The building will also include prep rooms for laboratory experiments and storage facilities.

The District asked the Kirkwood School District Foundation to help raise $1.6 million to outfit the new science center. The Foundation unanimously agreed and launched the "Pioneering the Advancement of Science Campaign", which has raised over $1 million to date. The District named the science center "The Earl and Myrtle Walker Science Center" after their lead donation of $800,000 to the Kirkwood School District Foundation's campaign. Earl and Myrtle are long time supporters of the District and met in 1937 in a KHS biology class. Thank you to our supporters and for providing students at KHS with the latest technology and equipment for their science education.

"Thanks to the hard work of the administration and the generosity of the voters, we have our wonderful new science facility and now our new gym," Board President Matt Cottler said. "This is a very exciting day for the school and the community."

Improving the athletic and PE facilities at the high school was a major component of Proposition I, a $28-million bond issue approved by district voters in April of 2005.

The new gym will become the high school's primary venue for varsity athletics, and will significantly increase PE space at the school. It will seat over 1,700 people, and will be located between the west building and the existing gym. The new gym will be able to hold the entire student body, a first for KHS. The gym will feature an interactive LED screen and two score boards.

The current main gym and auxiliary gym will continue to hold athletic events and PE classes.
