About Your Board of Education
- As elected representatives of the citizens of the Kirkwood School District R-7, the seven-member Board of Education serves as the governing body for the community's public school system. The school board sets district policies, selects the superintendent of schools, adopts the annual budget, and determines the tax rate.
- An annual school board election is held in April. Board members serve three-year overlapping terms with two or three members elected each year. School board members, who receive no salary, are committed and concerned citizens who devote countless hours working on behalf of children and the educational interests of Kirkwood R-7 residents.
Meetings and Agendas
- The Board of Education generally meets the first and third Monday of each month during the school year and monthly during the summer. Meetings are held in the board room of the district's Administrative Services Center, 11289 Manchester Road, at 7 p.m. The community is welcome and encouraged to attend.
- Regular meetings and board workshops are open to the public. Executive session meetings, which are closed to the public in accordance with Missouri Sunshine Law, are scheduled as required and held only for certain student, personnel, property and legal matters.
- Agendas for the meetings are prepared on the Thursday before each Monday meeting by the superintendent of schools in consultation with the Board president. A copy is posted at the ASC and schools, local newspapers, city halls, and the Kirkwood Public Library are sent electronic notification for posting on Friday. Agendas are available to the public online at www.kirkwoodschools.org (under About Us>Board of Education>Board Meetings), at the front desk in the central office or at the meetings.
- The official minutes of the Board of Education are available for public review in the superintendent's office and also at the Kirkwood Public Library after approval.
Addressing the Board
- District residents are welcome to share their views with the Board of Education, and a forum for public comment is provided at 7 p.m. before the start of regular meetings.
- District residents who wish to address the Board must complete a request card which is available at the board clerk's table. Completed cards may be returned to the board clerk, who presents them to the board president before the start of the meeting. Residents may speak to specific agenda items or to education topics of general interest. Speakers are asked to limit their comments to three minutes and to furnish copies of their comments.
- Residents may also express their views by writing to Board President, Kirkwood Board of Education, 11289 Manchester Road, Kirkwood 63122-1197. Copies of the material submitted will be provided to all Board members for consideration.
