The Kirkwood Call student newspaper for 2008-09 has been announced as a finalist for a 2009 Newspaper Pacemaker award, the highest honor presented by the National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA). The Call is one of only 30 publications nationwide in the 16 or fewer pages category and the only school from Missouri to earn this recognition. KHS 2009 graduate David Danaher, who is attending who is attending the University of Missouri majoring in journalism, served as editor in chief for the 2008-09 Kirkwood Call and its 35-person staff. According to Mitch Eden, journalism/English teacher and Call adviser, being a Pacemaker nominee is a national championship for high school journalism students.
Pacemakers are selected by the staff of a professional newspaper in the host city of the JEA/NSPA Fall National High School Journalism Convention, which will be held Nov. 12-15 in Washington, D.C. Judges select Pacemaker Finalists and Pacemakers based on the following: coverage and content, quality of writing and reporting, leadership on the opinion page, evidence of in-depth reporting, design, photography, art and graphics. Several issues from each newspaper's production schedule are randomly selected to be judged, which ensures that to be competitive for a Pacemaker, a publication must show consistent quality over an entire academic year. More information about the Pacemaker award can be found at http://nspa.studentpress.org/winners/npm09.html.
The Kirkwood High School 2009 Pioneer yearbook has received several awards at the state and national levels. The Missouri Interscholastic Press Association’s awarded the yearbook its highest honor rating of All-Missouri in the MIPA’s annual review. The Pioneer earned 474 of 500 points in the areas of theme/concept and services, coverage, copy, design and photography.
The 2009 Pioneer earned a Gold Medal in the Columbia Scholastic Press Association’s annual scholastic yearbook critique by scoring 935 of 1,000 points in the areas of concept, coverage, writing, and photography and design. In addition, the paper earned All-Colombian honors in the areas of concept, coverage and writing.
Mitch Eden, journalism/English teacher and yearbook adviser, Eden credits the 34-member Pioneer staff led by editor in chief Anna Holyan, a 2009 graduate attending Westminster College, for these exceptional achievements.
The family of 2009 KHS valedictorian Marion Sudvarg made a special book donation on Sept. 15 to the Nipher Middle School Library in honor of Bennie Evans, a former custodian at Nipher Middle School who retired in 1996. The donation included books that celebrate African-Americans and honor the memory of Mr. Evans and his dedication to young people. Abbe Sudvarg, Marion’s mother, had asked Nipher library media specialist Mary Evans to provide her with a list of books the library had planned to purchase. The Sudvarg family purchased the new books, which included biographies of Thurgood Marshall, W.E.B. DeBois and President Barack Obama as well as histories of the civil rights movement and integration.
Students from Betty Bell’s seventh-grade communication arts class represented the school during the program. Seventh-graders Rebecca Roth and Yusef Muhammad accepted the books from Mrs. Sudvarg on behalf of all Nipher students. Members of the Evans family who attended the dedication included Mrs. Helen Evans, widow of Mr. Evans, his sister Carol Doucette, his daughter Nina Boyd and her fiancé Johnny Jones.
Dr. Robert Dillon, assistant principal of Nipher Middle School, has written an article selected by the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) for publication in the Oct. 15 edition of ASCD Express, a national bi-monthly publication designed for school leaders. The article, which includes ideas about how principals can design their day to maximize the success, will appear in the column titled "Building Blocks of Daily Leadership.”
