The Sista Girl Club at Robinson Elementary School in Kirkwood recently donated funds to provide $200 worth of supplies for the St. Louis Immigrant and Refugee Women’s Program (IWRP) by selling hot chocolate for 25 cents a cup at recess every Thursday in December. IWRP is a St. Louis non-profit organization committed to helping women arriving in St. Louis from foreign countries learn basic English and practical living skills.
The girls decided to help IRWP, after watching a presentation on immigration by Amy Stephens, who teaches English as a second language in Kirkwood schools. Stephens talked with the girls about the challenges refugees often face when they are new to the United States.
